Por vs para: the difference you can hear

Por vs para: the difference you can hear

After ser and estar, this is the second trap. English turns both words into "for", so the ear gives you nothing to go on. The twenty-item lists that search results offer are hard to remember. Something else works: two questions.

Two questions instead of twenty rules

Para looks forward: to a purpose, a recipient, a deadline. The question is what for, and where to?

Por looks back: to a cause, a route, a price. The question is why, and through what?

Both sentences are correct and they say different things: in the first the job is ahead, in the second it is behind and it is the reason.

Para: purpose, recipient, deadline, destination

Por: cause, route, exchange, stretch of time

The pairs that show the difference

Phrase Meaning
Lo hago para ti I am making it for you (you get the result)
Lo hago por ti I am doing it for your sake, in your place (you are the reason)
Viajo para España I am travelling to Spain (destination)
Viajo por España I am travelling around Spain (route)
Es para mañana It is due tomorrow (deadline)
Fue por la mañana It happened in the morning (when)

The first pair is the most useful one. Trabajo para él - he is my boss, I work for him. Trabajo por él - I am covering his shift, he is off sick. One letter, a completely different working relationship.

Set phrases worth learning whole

Some expressions do not follow the logic, and arguing with them is pointless:

Learn them as vocabulary, not as grammar.

How to drill it

  1. Ask the question out loud. Before choosing, ask yourself: purpose or cause? Within a month the question disappears on its own.
  2. Collect pairs. Every sentence where both are possible goes into your notes twice, with both translations. Twenty such pairs beat any textbook table.
  3. Speak. Por and para settle not when the rule is understood but after you have used it twenty times in live speech and been corrected three times.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a short rule for por and para?

Yes: para looks forward (purpose, recipient, deadline, destination), por looks back (cause, route, price, duration). If "in order to" fits, it is para; if "because of" or "through" fits, it is por.

Why is it always "gracias por" and never "gracias para"?

You thank someone for a cause - for something that already happened. That is a backward look, so por. The same goes for por favor, por supuesto and por eso, which are easier learned whole.

How long does it take to stop confusing them?

The rule takes one lesson. The automatic choice takes a few weeks of speaking practice - this topic does not close by reading tables.
